Veena

Instrumental songs are music without any vocals. Instrumental interludes highlight the skill, musically and virtuously of performers. In carnatic classicals, Veena, Venu and Mridanga are considered to be the trinity of instrumental music. Among this Veena is profoundly said to be the queen of  String instruments. Dated back to the first millennium BCE, Veena has got its significance in the Rigveda and Samaveda.

According to hymns and texts, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped  as the mother of all arts and knowledge. Devotion exceeds as oneself sees mother goddess carrying Veena in her hands. Saint Narada is also depicted carrying Veena. As such it is considered as the oldest indian instrument Tantri Vadya. Modern day innovations and modifications in Veena were cloned during the reign of Raghunath Naik in Thanjavur.

Myths on the origin of Veena dates back into the nomadic life of humans as they earn for themselves as hunters. While playing bows and arrows; the spread of sound turned into the acoustics of ( formation of ) Veena. The primitive form of Veena was called to be “Yazh”.

PLAYING STYLE:

Veena held horizontally, played while sitting cross-legged using the index and middle fingers of the right hand to pluck, and the left hand to produce oscillations/gamakas. One should learn hand and finger coordinations simultaneously to produce the music required. Learning Veena can be very challenging due to its complex structure, precise finger placement and complex plucking technique. Beginners require structured guidance and sheer perseverance to develop accuracy, tone and understanding ragas.
